The Upside Foundation of Canada, a registered Canadian charity that works with Canadian start-ups to “Share the Upside” and give back to their communities, announced the appointment of Howard Gwin as an Ambassador.  Howard has been an ardent supporter of the The Upside Foundation and this appointment formally recognizes his role as Ambassador.

“Howard is a tremendous role model for tech entrepreneurs and a sought after advisor.  When he first had the idea to provide advisory services in return for support of the Upside Foundation, we were thrilled.  He has now done this numerous times and has been a huge contributor to Upside Foundation as a result.  We could not ask for a more dedicated or exemplary role model as an Ambassador and so we are pleased he accepted this unique position created for him”, said Rob Antoniades, Upside Foundation Co-Founder and Chair.

Howard leverages more than two decades of executive level operating experience helping software companies scale. As an independent Corporate Director, Chairman, and Operating Chairman, Howard has helped more than two dozen software, SaaS and digital media companies build, scale and drive positive outcomes. Howard has experience in all major software industry segments, and has focused on both the large enterprise and SMB marketplaces. Howard has served as a senior operating executive or independent corporate director with four software/SaaS companies that scaled from less than $60M in revenues to more than $1Billion valuation/outcomes. In addition, Howard has venture capital experience, acting as a partner for firms in the Silicon Valley and Canada.

In 2000, Howard was President/COO of Solect Technology Group, sold to Amdocs Inc. for US$1.4B. Prior to Solect, Howard was EVP World Wide Operations at Peoplesoft Inc., responsible for company revenue streams and field employees. During his tenure, the company grew from less than $100M in revenues to $1.3B. Howard began his career spending 13 years in senior sales, marketing and operations roles with IBM and Xerox.  Howard has a Bachelor Degree from Simon Fraser University.

Howard welcomes the official role of Ambassador and is excited about continuing to help The Upside Foundation. “Those of us who have had the great fortune of working in the North American technology sector now have a fantastic vehicle to give back. The Upside Foundation makes it very easy and I encourage all entrepreneurs to think about pledging options or warrants in this way,” said Howard.

The Upside Foundation is a new platform that facilitates early-stage, high-growth companies to support local charitable efforts by donating stock options or warrants, not cash.  When a liquidity event occurs, the Upside Foundation sells its options or warrants and donates the proceeds to relevant and leading edge Canadian charities with founder input.

Once start-ups are part of the Upside Foundation, Founders are able to reach out to like-minded entrepreneurs for feedback and support.  In addition, since the team behind the Upside Foundation includes VCs, seasoned entrepreneurs, as well as an Advisory Board, donors have opportunities for informal discussions with experts in their ecosystem.
